Understanding Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is a serious issue that can impact anyone in the workplace, creating a hostile environment and affecting both mental and professional well-being. At its core, sexual harassment involves unwelcome, inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature that interferes with your ability to work or creates a threatening work environment. Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Quid Pro Quo Harassment: This occurs when job benefits such as promotions, raises, or continued employment are conditioned on the acceptance of unwelcome sexual advances or requests.
- Hostile Work Environment: This type involves a pattern of unwelcome and pervasive sexual conduct, comments, or behaviors that create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. It can include inappropriate touching, suggestive remarks, or displaying explicit materials.
- Cat’s Paw Sexual Harassment: A nuanced form of workplace misconduct where an individual in a position of authority uses a subordinate or another employee to carry out harassing behavior on their behalf. In this scenario, the primary perpetrator remains hidden behind a “cat’s paw”—a person who acts as an intermediary, executing the harassment while the true instigator avoids direct responsibility.
- Third-Party Harassment: Sometimes harassment is perpetrated by individuals who are not direct employees, such as clients, vendors, or contractors, but it still affects the work environment and employee well-being.
